networks are fantastic !
utilising only the barest of technology, networks give everyone access to the rarest bits, the only colour printer that works properly, the internet and a central backup machine... you do backup don't you?
coming in a number of different flavours, networks allow you to share limited resources across a number of PCs and allow you to simplfy the protection of specific critical data
Setting up is easy, so microsoft would have us believe, and everything is rosy... so long as the easy wizard install thingy works and there are no gremlins...
...because if there are... networks can become the stuff nightmares are made of
To be straight they are fairly simple if kept simple. The complications occur when they are not managed properly, maintained properly or invested in. If no single protocol is maintained they just become more tangled and everything loses connectivity or slows to a more than useless point
